Fall 2022: Special edition

Waltz of the Polypeptides, a sculpture by Mara G. Haseltine located on the Laboratorycampus, depicts a ribosome caught in the act of producing the BLyS protein, which stimulates the body鈥檚 infection-fighting antibodies. In providing a glimpse at the birth of a single protein, this sculpture鈥攍ike the institution that owns it鈥攐ffers fascinating windows to the world of biology and beyond.

Summer 2022: Special edition

This is the path scientists who are participating in a meeting take to Nicholls Biondi Hall, opened in 2015. This is the main venue for poster sessions, a key component of scientific meetings, during which researchers display posters to engage with colleagues about their methods and outcomes. More than 5,000 posters are displayed during the typical two-year Laboratorymeeting cycle.

Summer 2021: Special edition

The pandemic, masks, and social distancing could not stop Laboratoryemployees from interacting. Colleagues work at an outdoor area overlooking the harbor. Atop the gazebo behind them is a weather vane depicting an adenovirus. Work done at the Laboratory in the 1970s and 1980s was foundational for today鈥檚 adenovirus-based COVID-19 vaccines and many other medical innovations.

DNA Learning Center (DNALC) Assistant Director Amanda McBrien delivers a virtual lab session, leveraging the methodologies and technologies she and her fellow instructors have developed and deployed over the last 30 years to engage students, teachers and families in biology and genetics. DNALC educational resources are freely accessible on-line and on-demand.

Summer 2019

Originally constructed in 1953, and named for LaboratoryDirector Milislav Demerec (1941 to 1960), the newly renovated Demerec Laboratory building reopens this year. With a rich history of groundbreaking discoveries, the building holds great promise for addressing today鈥檚 most challenging diseases.

Winter 2018

Larry Norton and Priscilla Chan flank Bruce Stillman at the 13th Double Helix Medals dinner, helping raise $4.5 million. Thank you to emcee Lesley Stahl and chairs: Jamie Nicholls & Fran Biondi, Leonard Lauder, Rita & Arthur Levinson, Terry & Bob Lindsay, Yuri Milner, Eleanor & Howard Morgan, Elaine & Eduardo Saverin, and Danielle & Paul Taubman.

Summer 2018

Dale Chihuly鈥檚鈥淭wisting Dendrites鈥� hangs in the Marks Laboratory building, a hotbed of Laboratoryneuroscience. It is the artist鈥檚 blown-glass impression of the networks of branched extensions of nerve cells that receive inputs from other cells.

Winter 2017

鈥淎s biology becomes more molecular, it is becoming more defined,鈥� says LaboratoryProfessor Leemor Joshua-Tor. She has mastered technologies that allow her to use the shape of molecules to figure out what they do and how they work. Joshua-Tor is pictured alongside a cryo-electron microscope, with which she can see atomic-level 3-dimensional images. This is just one example of powerful technology scientists harness to advance biology.
